SETTLEMENT RECOVERY CENTER ANNOUNCES SIMPLE WAY FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO RAISE THOUSANDS

Technology donation plan opens doors for non-profits to build capacity for free

December 9, 2003 - San Francisco, Calif. - At a time when charitable giving is down nearly 40 percent in every non-profit sector nationwide, Settlement Recovery Center (http://www.settlementrecovery.com), a company that helps businesses and consumers file claims against Microsoft, today announced the launch of DonateDirect, a system that lets non-profits and membership organizations receive up to $10,000 worth of technology for free.

In January 2003, Microsoft agreed to a $1.1 billion settlement for overcharging California customers for software purchased from 1995-2003. This historic settlement delivers vouchers that are as good as cash for purchasing technology. Individuals can claim up to $100 in vouchers by completing a simple application. The settlement also lets consumers give their vouchers to worthy organizations. The kicker is that voucher donations may be tax deductible if donated to qualified 503(c) charities, but any organization, regardless of its tax status, can participate.

In time for holiday charitable giving, consumers, organizations and donors who visit www.settlementrecovery.com can collect vouchers and give them to a non-profit of their choice.

"Whether it's a scout troop that needs computer notebooks to earn programming merit badges, or a church that needs a new database system, or an after-school program that wants a computer lab, high ticket technology tops the wish-list of many nonprofit's and membership organizations," said CEO Howard Yellen . "Now, there is an easy way for people to support their most important cause with a turn-key process through Settlement Recovery Center . We encourage people to make the most of this amazing settlement by passing the benefits along to the organizations who need it most."

Any non-profit organization is eligible to receive the voucher donations, which can be managed through SRC or by Development/Fundraising managers within each non-profit. When an organization signs up with DonateDirect, they are provided with all the tools to make it easy for donors to allocate their vouchers, including:

  • a custom website to funnel donations directly to the organization,

  • sample email announcements to send to their members, donors, Board members and supporters, a link to put on their homepage directing members to the donation site,

  • and all the other technical, marketing, administrative, and legal services needed to start receiving donated claims immediately.

Once at the website donors can assign their claims of up to $100 each to their favorite non-profit organization in less than 5 minutes.

Josh Newman , CEO of EdTec Inc., a service provider for California charter schools, said, "We are constantly trying to implement new technology in charter schools on a limited budget. Settlement Recovery Center 's DonateDirect program will allow our members to utilize the vouchers and donate much needed technology to our schools to create richer learning environments for students to succeed."

The deadline for filing claims is March 15, 2004 so nonprofit's that want to participate have to act quickly or risk missing this singular opportunity. If sufficient claims are not filed by the deadline, Microsoft could end up keeping hundreds of millions of dollars that are supposed to be returned to Californians.
